According to a recent DSnews report there are 1.5 million zombie properties in America. That is roughly 1.6% vacant single family homes or condos. In 2018, the Census Bureau conducted a community survey and found that 17,019,726 homes were unoccupied. The data from this year’s survey was compiled to determine the counties with the most vacant homes. 

WHICH COUNTIES HAVE VACANT HOMES?

The county with one of the highest rates of vacant houses is Ashtabula County, Ohio. Roughly 23.3% of the county is vacant. Ohio has one of the largest amounts of vacant homes in the country, with about 900. Almost half of these homes are in the Cleveland area. Also, they found the top two zip codes in the nation with the highest number of zombie properties are in Ohio. Another county with high vacancy rates is Cape May County, New Jersey. Around 60% of the homes are unoccupied, however a large amount of the homes are vacation homes. In New Jersey, there are 431 vacant homes. According to ATTOM, New York has the largest amount of zombie properties in the United States. 2,428 homes in New York are vacant, most of which are around New York City. Around 26% of the homes in Jefferson County are vacant, which is the highest percentage in the country.
